Los Angeles pharmaceutical billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong plans to give University of California regents a $100-million guaranty to underwrite the county's proposal to reopen Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital by 2012, it was reported Thursday. The gift from his family foundation is intended to reassure university officials hesitant to reopen the public hospital, which county officials eventually closed two years ago after a history of well-publicized mishaps earned it the moniker "Killer King.''
